About Mapusa
Mapusa is a town in North Goa. The place is located 13 kilometers to the north of Panaji (the state capital). Also a headquarters of Taluka Bardez, Mapusa is a fast developing town of Goa. It is situated on National Highway 17 and connects Mumbai to the port city Kochi.
According to the census of 2011, the populace of Mapusa was 40487. The
avg. literacy rate of the town is 76 percent. Marathi, Konkani, English
and Hindi are the languages that are widely spoken here.
Geography of Mapusa
Mapusa lies on the banks of river Mapusa, coordinates at 15.60 degrees in North and 73.82 degrees in the East. The avg. elevation of the town is 49 ft or 15 m. The town is situated on the river banks of River Mapusa. Marmagao, Goa Velha and Panaji are some important cities located close to Mapusa. The city experiences tropical climate. Summers are very hot with maximum temperature soaring up to 37 degree Celsius. Mapusa becomes extremely humid during summers. Winters are pleasant and the temperature drops down to 21 degree Celsius. Due to close proximity to Arabian Sea the weather remains humid in general.
Economy of Mapusa
Mapusa has its own share in the economy of Goa. This beautiful town being close to numerous beaches is flocked by tourists all over the year. There are a very few hotels in the town. At "Mapusa Friday Market” you can shop for variety of goods. The Friday market is mainly dominated by the locals and focuses on vegetables, spices, agricultural produce, plants, clothes and local fruits. It is a best place to buy soverniers and also delicious foot items. Fresh vegetables like pumpkins and sweet potatoes and fruits like small
fresh beans to red-brown “Moira Bananas” and many types of pulses are
beautifully exhibited.
Tourism in Mapusa
Mapusa boasts a few municipal buildings that belong to the colonial period and are located on Altinho Hill. This small town has a majority of contemporary buildings that sprawl around slopes of Altinho Hillock. Other noteworthy places of attractions in Mapusa includes Our Lady of Miracles church, Shri Dev Bodgeshwar Sansthan, Maruti Temple etc.Our Lady of Miracles: Established in 1594, this church has undergone several changes and has been reconstructed many times. After Easter on the 16th day, the yearly feast day of the church is rejoiced by local population of the area. Also known as Saint Jerome's Church, it is a symbol of communal harmony in Goa.
Shri Dev Bodgeshwar Sansthan: This popular temple is situated in the outskirts of Mapusa. Lord Bodgeshwar is the main deity of this pious shrine. Located amidst the rice fields this gorgeous temple is beautifully illuminated at night. A plethora of devotees assemble here on the eve of annual Jatra.
Maruti Temple: Constructed in 1840s, it is said to be erected at a place where Lord Hanuman was secretly revered during the harsh times of Portuguese reign. The color of Maruti temple is pastel. The doorway of the temple is adorned with intricate carvings crafted by the local craftsperson.
